DIEGETIC – Things within the world of film.
DIEGETIC SOUND – Sound within the world of film. There are two types of Diegetic Sound:
- ON-SCREEN DIEGETIC SOUND – Sound within the world of film - we can hear the sound and we can see where it’s coming from.
- OFF-SCREEN DIEGETIC SOUND – Sound within the world of film – we cannot see where it is coming from.
NON-DIEGETIC SOUND – Added sound, not part of the world of film. E.g. voice-overs and soundtracks.
SOUND BRIDGES – When the sound from one scene continues into or over the next scene (gives the sense of continuity).
PARALLEL SOUND – The music tone and mood matches the action on the screen.
CONTRAPUNTAL SOUND (ASYNCHRONUS SOUND) - When what we hear does not match what we see; it is out of synch.
FOLEY TRACK - The diegetic soundtrack, created by special Foley artists. Foley artists enhance sounds or create them from scratch. E.g. footsteps, a dinosaur hatching from an egg or a gunshot made louder etc.
